In a case from Los Angeles, an American federal judge has handed down a 60-year prison sentence to 74-year-old Samir Ousman Alsheikh, a former military official from Syria, after he was charged with ordering and committing acts of torture against detainees at Adra Prison from 2005 to 2008. The victims gave chilling testimonies describing severe beatings, solitary confinement, and torturing of the body in an effort to subdue political dissidence during the regime of former President Assad. The man entered the U.S. in 2020 through fraudulent statements on his immigration papers to secure a green card and was subsequently arrested in July 2024 at the Los Angeles International Airport on torture and fraud charges.
